A wolf a child a saint. That’s the legend of St Simpert isn’t it? Right here before us stands St Simpert’s church a testament to Augsburg’s enduring faith and resilience.

St Simpert wasn’t just any bishop. He served Augsburg from 778 to 807. He lived during the reign of Charlemagne a time of both great change and turmoil. Augsburg found itself caught between the warring factions of the Franks and the Bavarians. Simpert played a crucial role in the city’s rebuilding after the devastating conflicts. He was more than a religious leader. He was a powerful figure a key player in the political landscape.

Some say Simpert was Charlemagne’s nephew a fact shrouded in a little mystery. There’s evidence suggesting Simpert was also abbot of Murbach Abbey in Alsace. Before he became bishop of Augsburg he may have overseen this important monastery. He certainly spent time there. He later consolidated the bishoprics of Augsburg and Neuburg a feat of considerable administrative skill. He oversaw the completion and consecration of Augsburg Cathedral. He was a man who actively promoted the growth of religious communities. He is said to have cared deeply for the thriving of St Mang’s monastery in Füssen.

But it’s the legend of the wolf that truly captures the imagination. The story goes that Simpert rescued a child from a wolf’s jaws. This act of bravery sealed his status as a protector of the innocent. A patron saint a protector of children and Augsburg’s youth.

Simpert’s life wasn’t without its challenges. The sources don’t always agree on every detail of his life. Some things remain unclear. We know his relics rested in the Basilica of St Ulrich and Afra. Then in 1492 they were moved to their present location.

His feast day is celebrated on October 13th. The large marble figure above his grave dates to 1714 a stunning testament to the lasting devotion to this remarkable man. Bishop Walter Mixa formally entrusted Augsburg’s youth to St Simpert’s protection in 2007.

So as we stand here at St Simpert’s church remember his legacy. Remember the man who rebuilt a city who protected the innocent and who continues to inspire faith and hope in Augsburg. Remember St Simpert.
