What if I told you that this temple before us has risen from the ashes not once but twice? This is 蓮華寺. It is a testament to resilience and rebirth in Osaka.

蓮華寺 stands as a beacon of faith. It offers solace in this vibrant city. Its history is intertwined with Osaka’s own story of trials and triumphs.

Let’s step back to 1770. A priest named Myoko Asei Rengein Nichiyu took over Jimyo-in Temple. He changed its sect to Hokke. In the following year it became a branch temple of Daisekiji Temple. Daisekiji’s 33rd head priest, Nichigen, founded 蓮華寺.

Now imagine a devastating fire engulfing 蓮華寺 in 1911. It burned the temple to the ground. Yet, from those ashes, it was rebuilt in 1913. But tragedy struck again. In 1945, World War II bombings ravaged Osaka. 蓮華寺 was once more reduced to ruins.

The temple’s spirit remained unbroken. In 1964, the 18th head priest broke away from Nichiren Shoshu. He established Nichiren Jitsu宗. This decision reflected a deep commitment. It showed a rejection of undue interference. It stood against a fusion-like stance towards the Soka Gakkai.

Today, 蓮華寺 is easily accessible. A short walk from Nakazakicho Station is all it takes. The station can be reached via the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line and Tanimachi Line.

While exploring Osaka, remember its nickname is “the Nation’s Kitchen.” Osaka earned this title as a center for the rice trade during the Edo period. Today it is a gourmand’s paradise.

The story of 蓮華寺 mirrors Osaka’s journey. It has faced destruction and embraced renewal. It embodies the enduring spirit of its people. It is a place where faith and history intertwine. It continues to inspire all who visit.
