In 1952, a vision took root in Houston. This vision was to create a new spiritual home, a place where community could flourish. That vision became Saint Luke’s Presbyterian Church. Saint Luke’s Presbyterian Church didn’t start with a grand building. Its first service was held in the auditorium of Pershing Junior High School on March 16, 1952. Dr. Malcolm L. Purcell delivered a powerful sermon, his words echoing the church’s mission: “Behold, I have set before you an open door.” Just a few weeks later, on April 20th, the first Sunday school session took place, marking the beginning of Saint Luke’s commitment to education and spiritual growth. By September, the church had grown enough to formally organize, officially adopting the name “Saint Luke’s Presbyterian Church” and calling their first pastor, the Reverend Joe Owen. They even adopted a budget of $10,415, a testament to their dedication. They quickly outgrew Pershing and moved to Mark Twain Elementary School for more space. By April 1, 1953, Saint Luke’s Presbyterian Church celebrated its first anniversary with 72 adult members and a bustling Sunday school of 111 children. The church became a hub of activity, with after-worship coffee hours in members’ homes, monthly family night suppers, and even a men’s group. The church building we see today at 8915 Timberside Drive was built in stages. The first unit, dedicated in 1956, housed the fellowship hall, kitchen, offices, and classrooms. A second unit with more classrooms followed in 1959, and finally, in 1966, the sanctuary, choir loft, and library were completed. Even tragedy struck in 1990, when a fire damaged the second unit. But the congregation persevered, restoring the damaged rooms and continuing their mission. Saint Luke’s Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to the power of community, faith, and perseverance. It’s a reminder that even from humble beginnings, great things can grow.
