Didn’t Salt Lake City’s downtown once whisper tales of train whistles and bustling passengers? Now, it sings a different tune at The Gateway. This isn’t just a mall. The Gateway is a vibrant open-air complex blending retail, residences, and offices.
The Gateway stands on hallowed ground. It is centered around the historic Union Pacific Depot. This spot sits on the west side of Downtown Salt Lake City. You’ll find it nestled between 50 North and 200 South streets. Also, it lies between 400 and 500 West streets.
Imagine Rio Grande Street transformed. Special events turn it into a lively one-way path. It guides you north, straight through The Gateway’s heart. Once, The Gateway boasted 89 outlets. Today, it offers fresh retail experiences and a social hub for dining and nightlife.
In 2007, The Gateway’s northeast corner saw new heights. A seven-story office tower rose, spanning 230,000 square feet. It became home to over 1,200 Fidelity Investments employees.
However, by 2014, The Gateway faced challenges. Occupancy rates dipped. Major tenants like Apple ventured east. They sought the newer City Creek Center. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened it in 2012.
Retail Properties of America valued The Gateway at $75 million in 2014. They foresaw further decline. Efforts to stabilize and sell the center faltered. Yet, upgrades to outdoor areas and nearby projects offered hope.
Then, in 2016, a new chapter began. Vestar, a commercial real estate company, acquired The Gateway. Initially, a $30 million renovation was planned. Ultimately, Vestar invested $100 million. This investment revitalized the area. Security improvements led to a 79% drop in crime. Further reductions are expected. The downtown shelter on Rio Grande Street has also benefited from The Gateway’s renewed management.
Did you know The Gateway hosted the Sundance Film Festival at its Megaplex Theatres in 2023? Moreover, in 2021, the W.O.S.B Collective emerged. This Women-Owned Small Business Collective provides a unique shopping destination at The Gateway. It showcases globally sourced products. These include clothing, accessories, gifts, and local art. They spotlight women-owned businesses from around the world.
