Envision a church rising from former pastureland. That is Sankt Simeon. This church stands in Alt-Osdorf. It is a fairly young congregation. Sankt Simeon has been independent since 1953. Currently, it has about 3,500 members.
The well-known architect Joachim Matthaei designed Sankt Simeon. Construction finished in December 1958. The surrounding area still shows signs of its agricultural past. The church’s exterior and interior feature typical North German brick architecture. This style blends well with the neighborhood.
Matthaei designed two other sacred buildings shortly after Sankt Simeon. One was the Bethlehem Church in Eimsbüttel. It has since been deconsecrated and now houses a church-run daycare. The other was the Christuskirche in Garstedt. An old photo reveals Matthaei’s original simple design for Sankt Simeon.
In the late 1990s, a new section was added to Sankt Simeon. Jacobsgaard and Erkal were the architects. This addition connects modern community rooms to the church. This new architectural unit supports many activities. Sankt Simeon hosts groups of toddlers, children, youths, and seniors.
The community takes special pride in its Kemper organ. Paschen, the organ builder, thoroughly restored and partially renewed it. Sankt Simeon has a long-standing choir. There is also a younger choir and a children’s choir. All of these enrich the services. They regularly offer popular concerts and cultural activities.
The name of the congregation reveals key aspects of its identity. The spiritual name “Sankt Simeon” combines with the local name “Alt-Osdorf.” Sankt Simeon has active groups of younger and older members. Some live in a traditional rural setting. Others live and work in a modern environment.
