Beneath the dome of the Planetarium am Insulaner, secrets of the cosmos once unfolded. The Planetarium am Insulaner wasn’t always a silent giant. It once pulsed with the energy of six million stargazers. The Planetarium am Insulaner opened its doors in 1965. It offered a refuge from the city lights, a portal to distant galaxies. The 20-meter dome housed a Zeiss Vb star projector, capable of displaying over 8,900 stars. The projector, a marvel of engineering, could even recreate comets, shooting stars, and eclipses. A unique feature was the panorama of Berlin’s skyline, projected onto the dome’s horizon. This gave audiences a realistic view of the sky as seen from the Insulaner. The Planetarium am Insulaner was more than just a star projector. It was a hybrid system, blending analog and digital technologies. In 2010, the powerdome VELVET system by Zeiss was installed, adding 360-degree fulldome projections. This allowed visitors to journey through the universe in 3D, powered by astronomical databases. The Planetarium am Insulaner hosted a diverse range of events, from children’s shows about mice traveling to the moon to lectures on black holes. Even weddings took place under the artificial sky, until 2015. Now, the Planetarium am Insulaner stands silent, undergoing renovations. It awaits its rebirth as a modern educational center. The Zeiss Vb projector will be replaced, but the magic of the cosmos will surely return. The Planetarium am Insulaner will continue to inspire future generations to look up and wonder.
