A majestic red brick structure welcomes you. This is Saint Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church. It stands proudly at the junction of East 23rd Avenue and York Street.

Saint Ignatius Loyola Church is more than just a building. It’s a Denver landmark steeped in history and community. Built in 1924 it’s a stunning example of Late Gothic Revival architecture. Its impressive size 192 feet long 75 feet wide and 109 feet tall is breathtaking. The architects Frank W Frewen Jr and Frank Mountjoy created a masterpiece. They drew inspiration from a church in Cork Ireland.

The church’s story is one of faith resilience and social justice. Initially serving a largely Irish and Italian congregation it embraced a diverse community. After World War II many African Americans moved to the area. Jesuit leaders like Father William Markoe and Father Edward Murphy championed integration. They actively worked against segregation. Father Murphy’s efforts earned him national recognition including the Reward of Merit from the George Washington Carver Memorial Institute. He was also named Man of the Year by the National Negro Voters Educational Council. Their commitment to racial equality is a significant part of Saint Ignatius’ legacy.

The church’s beauty is captivating. Notice the twin 110-foot towers. Admire the five exquisite hand-stenciled stained-glass windows. The Carrara marble and oak woodwork add to the church’s elegance. Even the modern Celotex ceiling is a remarkable detail.

The church’s history also includes a school. It began in the basement in 1938. A brick school was later built in stages in 1950 and 1954. The school served the community for 73 years before closing in 2011. Today it houses the French American School of Denver.

Saint Ignatius Loyola Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a center for community life. A place of integration and social action. It continues to serve its community with a rich and complex history. It stands as a testament to faith community and the enduring power of hope. Its centennial anniversary in 2024 celebrated 100 years of service and a vibrant future. Take a moment to appreciate the story this church tells.
