Did Christ Ahnsahnghong really restore the early Church? This question hangs in the air as we stand before the World Mission Society Church of God here in Seoul. The WMSCOG claims its founder, Ahnsahnghong, established this church in 1964. He believed he was restoring the original teachings of the early Church. The church’s main temple, the New Jerusalem Pangyo Temple, is located in Bundang, near Seoul. Their headquarters are also nearby. The World Mission Society Church of God believes Ahnsahnghong is the Second Coming of Jesus. They also believe Zahng Gil-jah is God the Mother. This belief is central to their doctrine. They point to the use of Elohim, a plural word for God in Hebrew. They also cite Galatians 4:26, which mentions “our Mother.” The WMSCOG celebrates Passover. They believe it represents the new covenant and grants eternal life. They also observe the Sabbath on Saturday, from sunrise, unlike some other denominations. Women wear veils during worship, based on 1 Corinthians 11. The church does not celebrate Christmas, believing it originates from pagan traditions. They also avoid using crosses, considering them idolatry. Interestingly, they have been known to remove stained glass windows from acquired churches, due to an association with sun worship. Though controversial, the church reports having 3.7 million members across 175 countries. They have received recognition for their volunteer work, including The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in the UK. This church certainly raises many questions. It challenges conventional Christian beliefs with its doctrines of God the Mother and the Second Coming of Christ.
