Let me tell you about the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg. It is also known as HAW Hamburg. It is the second-largest university in Hamburg. HAW Hamburg is a network of research-oriented universities. This network is called UAS7. HAW Hamburg has four faculties. These faculties have 18 departments. They are spread across four locations in the city.
HAW Hamburg has a rich history. It evolved from several predecessor institutions. These include the Social Pedagogical Institute. It opened in 1917. There was also the State Technikum. It had a Higher School for Mechanical Engineering. This dates back to 1893. Other schools included those for shipbuilding, automotive engineering, electrical engineering and marine engine construction.
In 1873 Emilie Wüstenfeld opened a trade school for girls. This school evolved into the Meisterschule für Mode. Later, it became the Werkkunstschule für Textil, Grafik und Werbung. This school formed the core of the Department of Design.
In the autumn of 1968, ministers decided to merge engineering schools. They also merged higher vocational schools for economics, social pedagogy, social work, design, and agriculture. These became Fachhochschulen. These schools offered practice-oriented studies. They were for students who had completed the 12th grade.
The Hamburg Parliament passed the law on the Fachhochschule Hamburg on February 18, 1970. Its mission was to provide technical training. This was based on scientific or artistic principles. The aim was to apply scientific methods. It aimed to apply knowledge in an independent profession. Thirteen previously independent schools became departments of the Fachhochschule Hamburg.
The years 2001 and 2002 brought big changes. After years of effort, it was renamed Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg. In 2020, HAW Hamburg celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The departments of architecture, civil engineering and geomatics moved to the HafenCity University Hamburg in 2006. HAW Hamburg has a broad range of subjects and skills. In 2006, it began building competence centers. These centers bundle future-relevant topics across faculties. These topics range from health to renewable energies and communication.
In 2010, the university choir was founded. Uschi Krosch led the choir. In 2019, it sang in Carnegie Hall.
Micha Teuscher was the president of the university. He was in office from May 2, 2017, to May 2023. Since May 2023, Ute Lohrentz has been the president. She was previously Dean of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences at HAW.
In December 2022, HAW Hamburg suffered a cyberattack. The Vice Society hacker group used ransomware. This caused significant damage to the university’s operations. Exams were postponed and communication systems were restricted.
