Beneath the vibrant bustle of Porto’s Largo de São Domingos stands the “Três Metáforas de Árvores para uma Árvore Verdadeira.” This captivating sculpture, a final masterpiece by Alberto Carneiro, blends nature and artistry in a truly unique way. The Três Metáforas de Árvores para uma Árvore Verdadeira, meaning “Three Metaphors of Trees for a Real Tree,” was specifically designed for this bustling square. Imagine standing here in April 2018, witnessing the culmination of Carneiro’s vision, sadly completed after his passing in 2017. Three granite trees, reaching skyward at six, seven, and eight meters tall, dominate the square. Their slender trunks, etched with the words “Vida” (Life) and “Arte” (Art), echo themes central to Carneiro’s work. Above, their elongated, stylized crowns emphasize the verticality of the space, creating a sense of awe and wonder. But the Três Metáforas de Árvores para uma Árvore Verdadeira isn’t just about stone. At its heart lies a living olive tree, a “true tree,” offering a welcome patch of shade in the bustling commercial center. Carneiro envisioned this sculpture as a dance between the tangible and the conceptual, a dialogue between human creation and the natural world. He believed that “A tree is a work of art when recreated in itself as a concept to be a metaphor.” The Três Metáforas de Árvores para uma Árvore Verdadeira stands as a testament to that belief, a poetic expression of the interconnectedness of life and art.
