Carr Park

Across the street from St. Bonaventure Church sits Carr Park. It’s a Huntington Beach neighborhood park. Carr Park officially opened on April 8, 1972. It was designed by the architectural firm of Courtland Paul/Arthur Beggs and Associates. The park covers over ten acres, offering plenty of space for recreation. Carr Park boasts a variety of amenities. There’s an open play area, a designated children’s play area, park benches for quiet contemplation, and picnic facilities complete with tables and grills. For those who enjoy fishing, Carr Park offers that too. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The park’s namesake, Chris Carr, was a World War II Medal of Honor recipient. He was also a longtime Huntington Beach resident, making the park a fitting tribute to his service and connection to the community. Interestingly, the land where Carr Park now sits once belonged to Jeanne C. Carr and her husband, Dr. Ezra C. Carr. Their home, adorned with wisteria and roses, stood on Orange Grove Avenue around 1895. Jeanne Carr had envisioned a resort and horticulture school for women on this very land. The Carrs were forward-thinking individuals from California’s Central Valley, involved in establishing the California Grange. They also advocated for dress reform and women’s suffrage. The park stands as a testament to the changing landscape and evolving history of this area. From a private residence to a public park honoring a war hero, Carr Park represents the community’s growth and commitment to providing recreational spaces.
