Glimpse back to a time of knights. Haus Husen stands before you. It whispers tales of noble families and medieval origins. This is Haus Husen in Dortmund. It is more than just a building. It is a journey through centuries of Westphalian history.

Haus Husen’s story begins in the Middle Ages. It started as a knight’s estate. The Lords of Husen called this place home. Over time, ownership passed through several prominent families. These families included the Frydag, Romberg, and Schulz families. Each left their mark on this historic estate.

Around 1830, the main house was constructed. It was built in the classicist style. This architectural choice reflects the period’s elegance and order. A medieval residential tower is part of the complex. This tower dates back to the 17th century.

The estate includes several buildings. The first western outbuilding dates back to the mid-19th century. It features two stories. A central high entrance gate served as a passage. The lower area shows stone masonry. The upper part features timber framing. A smaller northern structure of stone was added later. Around 1870, a second outbuilding was built. It was made entirely of stone.

The Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder Land Westfalen acquired the medieval tower in 1984. Today, it serves as their state office and a youth holiday center. The Evangelische Landeskirche Westfalen owns Haus Husen itself.

Several noble families played a role here. In 1850, the estate passed to the von der Leithen family through marriage. In 1903, it went to the von Basse family. Documents from the 18th to 20th centuries are stored in the archive of Fürstenberg zu Herdringen. These documents include family matters, estate administration, railway, post, factories, and legal proceedings.

Haus Husen is one of several small aristocratic residences. They emerged from the Carolingian Reichshof. The Reichshof was located at the foot of the Syburg. Other such estates include Haus Steinhausen, Haus Ruhr and Haus Kückshausen.

The estate is enclosed by a stone wall. This wall opens to the south towards the Ruhr River. It features a gate in line with the main house portal.

Haus Husen stands as a reminder of Dortmund’s rich past. Once the home of knights and nobles. Today, it provides a unique look into local history. It connects medieval times with the present day. As you stand before Haus Husen, imagine the lives lived within these walls. Reflect on the families who shaped this place. Their stories remain etched in the stones of Haus Husen.
