Picture this a small green space nestled beside a bustling highway. This is Jackson Mill Green in East Elmhurst Queens. It’s a tranquil pocket of nature surprisingly close to the roar of LaGuardia Airport.

Jackson Mill Green’s story begins long before its official opening in September 1950. Centuries ago a mill stood here grinding wheat and corn for the local residents. It was known by several names Kip’s Mill Fish’s Mill and finally Jackson’s Mill named after its last owner Samuel Jackson. A dam created a millpond a vital part of the mill’s operation. The water wheel harnessed the pond’s flow powering the mill’s machinery. The road crossing that dam is today’s 94th Street. The pond itself is now under the Grand Central Parkway.

Think of the people who lived here. Imagine Dutch settlers arriving in the 17th century building the original mill. Picture the farmers working the surrounding Trains Meadows a name of uncertain origin perhaps a corruption of Drains Meadow referring to a stream flowing through the area. Or perhaps it was Sackhickniyeh its Native American name. Visualize the trolley cars arriving in 1894 carrying passengers to the North Beach amusement district. That district flourished until the 1920s then disappeared to make way for the airport.

Imagine the sounds of Jackson Mill Pond. The rush of the water powering the mill’s wheel. The calls of frogs that gave North Beach the nickname Frog Town. Now the sounds are very different the constant hum of traffic and planes overhead.

The park we see today was once called Trolley Triangle. Commissioner Stern changed the name to Jackson Mill Green in 1997. It’s a small park but it speaks volumes. Three large white rocks and concrete urns with plants stand in the green space. The trees lining the perimeter offer a quiet moment away from the airport’s busy environment.

Today Jackson Mill Green offers a quiet reflection on the area’s long history. From a colonial-era mill to a trolley line to a modern airport this small park represents centuries of change. It serves as a reminder of what came before reminding us that even in the heart of a busy city nature and history can coexist. It is a testament to Queens’ rich industrial and transit past a pleasant surprise for those who take a moment to notice it.
