“So you are telling me that the Queen of Heaven communicated with you?” You glance at me, a hint of disbelief in your eyes. I am still chuckling at Wanphen’s earlier claim, as we stand just outside the imposing Chao Mae Thap Thim Shrine, the iconic sea goddess temple in the heart of Bangkok. “She really did,” Wanphen says, a twinkle in her eye. “Mazu, the goddess of the sea, she is protective, especially of those who travel by sea.” I can’t resist, “But what about those of us who have never seen the ocean?” “Oh, don’t worry,” Wanphen says, “Mazu is a benevolent goddess. She protects everyone, even those who haven’t seen the sea. The shrine, it is actually a beacon of hope and safety for all.”

A long time ago, this temple was built right next to the Chao Phraya River, by Chinese immigrants from Southern China who had traveled far and wide. The area was once a bustling port with shops, restaurants, and even bicycle repair shops. But everything changed with the redevelopment of this area, leaving only the Chao Mae Thap Thim Shrine standing strong, a symbol of resilience and continuity.

The temple’s Hokkien architecture is still exquisite and striking. Inside, they have three statues that represent different stages of Mazu’s manifestation – as a young girl, ensuring safety during sea travel. Also as the ever-strong goddess Mazu who brings good fortune to businesses and as the empress in heaven, full of kindness and compassion.

I take a moment to soak it all in, imagining the waves crashing against the shore and the lanterns flickering in the Chinese-Thai community that once flourished here. I can almost hear the cacophony of street food vendors, the laughter of children playing in the squares, and the soft murmur of prayers being whispered inside the shrine. It is a reminder that even in the midst of constant change, there are some things that remain timeless, like the unwavering faith in a benevolent goddess who watches over all.
