Built in 1880 for Amédée Prouvost and his wife Josephine Yon the Hôtel Auguste-Lepoutre stands before us a testament to time. This grand building located at 301 Avenue des Nations-Unies in Roubaix was more than just a home. It was a symbol of industrial success. Amédée Prouvost a prominent figure in the textile industry built this impressive residence after relocating from the Grande Place. He lived there until his death. His widow continued to reside in the Hôtel until 1902.

The Hôtel Auguste-Lepoutre is a fascinating blend of private residence and public building. After the death of Madame Prouvost the building was rented to Auguste Lepoutre. This seemingly simple transaction marked a turning point in the Hôtel’s history. During the 1940s under the Vichy regime the Hôtel became a police station. For nearly 50 years it served as the central police station of Roubaix. Imagine the countless stories these walls have witnessed. The echoes of footsteps from both residents and officers linger within the halls.

Even today you can still appreciate the original splendor of the Hôtel Auguste-Lepoutre. The ground floor boasts three salons overlooking the garden. Their initial decor remains remarkably intact. Intricate moldings adorn the woodwork. Elaborate fireplaces stand as silent sentinels to bygone eras. Though the building is no longer a police station it continues to serve the community. It now houses various associations. Its historical significance is undeniable. Its architectural beauty endures.

The Hôtel Auguste-Lepoutre has been listed as a monument historique since 1999. This official recognition underscores the building’s importance to French heritage. It stands as a reminder of Roubaix’s industrial past. It speaks volumes about the lives of those who have graced its thresholds.

So as you stand here before the Hôtel Auguste-Lepoutre. Remember this isn’t just a building. It’s a story whispered through the ages. A story of industrial wealth family legacy and the changing face of a city. A story that continues to unfold within these walls.
