“Did you know that the Church of the Ascension in Los Angeles wasn’t always a quiet residential spot?” The Church of the Ascension once thrived. It was the oldest church in the Sunland-Tujunga area. Founded in 1914 it boasted 300 members in the late 1950s. The Church of the Ascension even had a drama group. Bill Scott the voice of Bullwinkle J Moose led it. Times changed. Membership dwindled in the 1980s. The Church of the Ascension went without a full-time rector. Reverend Wendy Watson tried to save it. She started community services for the poor. She held parenting classes and a drug and alcohol program for teens. Sadly it was too little too late. The Church of the Ascension closed in 1991. Its poor location on Mountair Avenue contributed to its decline. The neighborhood changed. It shifted from a white middle-class area to a Spanish-speaking immigrant community. John Fortman a long-time member made the motion to close. He felt the church should use its assets elsewhere. About 200 former members attended the final service. It was a bittersweet reunion. Archdeacon Hartshorn Murphy described it as a requiem. Many hadn’t seen each other in years. A slide show celebrated the Church of the Ascension’s history. Afterwards there was a party in the parish hall. Members joined other Valley parishes or St Luke’s of the Mountains. Reverend Watson went to Fuller Theological Seminary. The Church of the Ascension’s assets went to the Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese. If the building isn’t bought by another church the stained glass windows will be saved. The closing of the Church of the Ascension holds a lesson for other churches. Archdeacon Murphy said it died 25 to 30 years before its official closure. It survived on memories habits and cultural identity. The story of the Church of the Ascension serves as a reminder of how communities and places of worship can change over time. The Church of the Ascension’s legacy lives on in the memories of its members and its contribution to the Sunland-Tujunga community.
