Was it fate, divine intervention, or simply the need for a larger space that led to the creation of the Khizra Mosque? The story of the Khizra Mosque begins not here, at this impressive structure on Cheetham Hill Road, but a few hundred feet away at a converted Victorian semi-detached house. Opened in 1977 at 443 Cheetham Hill Road, this original Khizra Mosque served as a vital hub for the Muslim community. It housed daily prayers, a madrassah, study circles, and Quran classes. The mosque also bustled with youth clubs, karate clubs, and a Muslim advice center. Members of the mosque committee were deeply involved in local politics and public sector organizations. They provided cultural awareness seminars and mosque tours, bridging gaps between communities. The vibrant activities soon outgrew the converted house. In 1993, land was purchased just down the road, marking the future home of a new, purpose-built Khizra Mosque. Imagine the excitement as the foundation stone was laid in 1994. The current Khizra Mosque, completed and opened for prayers in 1997, stands as a testament to the community’s growth and dedication. But the story doesn’t end there. Adjacent to the new mosque stood a fire-damaged former hotel. This building was acquired and renovated alongside the mosque construction. Now, it houses a library, a teaching kitchen, offices, and madrassah classrooms. The Khizra Mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a center for learning, community support, and interfaith dialogue. It echoes the spirit of its humble beginnings, continuing to serve the community’s evolving needs.
