The Centrale de la Rivière-des-Prairies began its service in 1929. It proudly stands as one of Quebec’s oldest operating power plants. Hydro-Québec owns it. This makes it quite special. It’s the only Hydro-Québec power station so close to Montreal.
Imagine the 1920s. The roar of construction fills the air. Workers are building this essential power source. Finally in 1929, the Centrale de la Rivière-des-Prairies sparks to life. It brings power to the growing region.
Back then, Montreal Light, Heat and Power owned it. Later, the government nationalized it. That’s when Hydro-Québec took over. The Centrale de la Rivière-des-Prairies has been a vital part of Quebec’s energy landscape ever since.
Today, the Centrale de la Rivière-des-Prairies generates 45 MW of power. Six turbines harness the river’s energy. The height from the riverbed is just under eight meters. The altitude reaches about 17 meters.
But there’s more to this station than meets the eye. In 1985, renovations created a beautiful recreational space. A bike path and walking trail now grace the Montreal side. It forms part of the Parc-nature de l’Île-de-la-Visitation. A pedestrian bridge also provides access for fishermen on the Laval side.
