Hidden within Bucharest’s vibrant tapestry lies Biserica Sfântul Vasile cel Mare – Răzoare. This unassuming church holds a story as rich as the city itself. Biserica Sfântul Vasile cel Mare – Răzoare began not as a grand edifice, but as a humble chapel. In 1927, Father Vasile Bărbieru, originally from Transylvania, transformed a house at the intersection of Strada Sebastian, Sergent Nuțu Ioan, and Drumul Sării into a place of worship. This chapel served the community for 11 years. Even then, Father Bărbieru envisioned a larger church. He formed a committee dedicated to this dream. Their persistence bore fruit in 1928. The Ministry of War ceded land for the construction. Donations poured in from the Royal House, various institutions, military units, and believers across the country. Architect Maria Irineu drafted the plans, and in 1930, the foundation stone was laid. The church was consecrated in 1939, dedicated to Saint Basil the Great and Saint Parascheva. Between 1949 and 1951, the church’s interior blossomed with vibrant frescoes, thanks to the dedication of Father Toma Stănculescu and the generosity of parishioners. Artists Iosif Vass and Gheorghe Teodorescu-Romanați brought the walls to life. The finishing touches and paintings were completed during the time of Patriarch Justinian Marina. The 1977 earthquake left its mark, damaging the church and requiring the reinforcement of its three towers. Between 1991 and 1992, under the leadership of Father Ioan Neamu, the frescoes were meticulously restored by the painter Ronzeli. Biserica Sfântul Vasile cel Mare – Răzoare continued to evolve. In 2000, a holy water font was erected. A social canteen followed in 2003. A new iron fence with a concrete base replaced the old one in 2004. The parish office was built in 2006. The church received a new copper roof and exterior renovations in 2007. A mortuary chapel was added in 2008, completing the ensemble. Biserica Sfântul Vasile cel Mare – Răzoare stands as a testament to the enduring faith and community spirit of Bucharest.
