The name “Upper Caboolture” is a bit of a misnomer, don’t you think? It’s not actually “upper”, more of a separate entity than a higher part of the town of Caboolture. It’s like a little sister, close but independent. Upper Caboolture has a story of its own, one that starts with a school. Here’s the thing you might not know: In 1878, a provisional school popped up on Caboolture River Road. It was called Camp Flat Provisional School at the time, with 22 girls and 29 boys filling its benches. Things changed, a bigger change than just a name. The school became Camp Flat State School in 1880. The name changed again in 1916. Now, it was Caboolture Upper State School. This is a time when things were still very rural. Not like what you see now. Today, these streets here are full of new houses. It’s a stark contrast to the bush life of the 19th century. The school only lasted until 1918. But its story is the beginning of the story of Upper Caboolture. After this, the suburb became more and more urban. But you see, a part of Upper Caboolture is gone now. It was split up in 2023 to create five new areas. One of them is called Lilywood. Wagtail Grove is another. So while some of its land is taken away, Upper Caboolture remains. The story is still here in the houses and streets you see. The past lives on here, even as the area adapts and changes. The spirit of the old schoolyard and the bucolic days is still present. Upper Caboolture is a place that shows us how things in life can be different, evolve and still be beautiful.
