Imagine stepping into a space where modern architecture meets spiritual tradition at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. This is not just another cathedral. It is a testament to faith, art, and the vibrant history of Los Angeles.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels replaced the Cathedral of Saint Vibiana. The old cathedral suffered severe damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. This event prompted the construction of a new, grander cathedral.
In 1996, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles purchased a 5.6-acre site for $10.85 million. The name “Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels” was chosen. This echoed the original name of Los Angeles: El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles or “The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels”.
Construction began in 1998. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels officially opened its doors on September 2, 2002. The final cost was $189.7 million.
Rafael Moneo, a Pritzker Prize-winning Spanish architect, designed the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. His postmodern design incorporates acute and obtuse angles. Notably, right angles are avoided. This gives the building a unique, contemporary feel.
As you approach the entrance, notice the bronze doors and the statue of the Virgin Mary. These were designed by Robert Graham. Three fountains and a bronze sculpture by Johnny Bear Contreras also adorn the grounds. The latter serves as a Native American memorial.
Inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, you will find an impressive organ. It is Opus 75 of Dobson Pipe Organ Builders. This instrument incorporates pipes from the 1929 Wangerin organ of St. Vibiana’s Cathedral. With 6,019 pipes, it ranks among the largest in North America.
Beneath the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels lies a mausoleum. It contains 1,270 crypts and 4,746 columbarium niches for burials. Proceeds from the sale of these spaces support the cathedral. The mausoleum is the final resting place for several past bishops and archbishops of Los Angeles. Also interred here are actor Gregory Peck and his wife Veronique.
The relics of Saint Vibiana are also enshrined in the mausoleum. She is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Her tomb is the centerpiece of the St. Vibiana Chapel.
Stained glass windows from the old Cathedral of Saint Vibiana are featured in the crypt mausoleum. These windows were restored. Two new windows depicting guardian angels were added at the entrance.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is more than just a place of worship. It is a cultural center. The cathedral hosts musical performances and organ recitals. These recitals are held on the first Wednesday of every month.
