Ratchathewi wasn’t always its own district. Before 1989 it was part of Dusit and then Phaya Thai. Its present identity blossomed from the significant Ratchathewi Intersection where Phetchaburi and Phaya Thai Roads meet. This intersection is named for Phra Nangchao Sukumalmarsri Phra Ratchathewi a royal consort to King Chulalongkorn. The title Phra Rachathewi denotes a royal rank for royal consorts.

The district’s identity is woven into its landmarks. The Victory Monument stands tall a tribute to soldiers lost in the French-Thai War. Its five bayonets symbolize the army navy air force police and civilian bureaucracy. Eighty-nine names are inscribed below including losses from World War II and the Korean War. The monument was once a major bus hub. It’s now near a BTS Skytrain station.

Baiyoke Tower and Baiyoke Tower II pierce the Bangkok skyline. For a time they were the tallest buildings in the city. Tower I finished in 1987 Tower II in 1997. Both are primarily hotels with shops below. They dominate the Pratu Nam area.

Suan Pakkad Palace is a museum of Thai antiques. It houses eight traditional wooden houses. One exhibit features 4000-year-old Ban Chiang pottery. This sits in the modern Chumbhot-Pantip gallery building. This blends history and modernity a perfect reflection of Ratchathewi.

Ratchathewi offers more than just historical charm. It’s a transportation hub with BTS Skytrain MRT and Airport Rail Link stations. It’s also home to numerous universities and educational institutions. The area thrives with schools and even a notable tutoring center Wannasorn Tower.

The district also boasts diverse healthcare facilities. Public and private hospitals offer comprehensive care. The Bhumirajanagarindra Kidney Institute and Phyathai 1 Hospital are prime examples.
