SMK Tasek Permai’s story began in 1992. The school was built on a leveled hillside in Kampung Tasek Permai. Syarikat Pembinaan Tenompok Sdn. Bhd. was the main construction company. The Public Works Department of Kajang oversaw the project. On November 20, 1994, JKR handed over the building to the Hulu Langat District Education Office.

SMK Tasek Permai opened its doors on December 1, 1994. The first student body comprised 802 students. Thirty-nine teachers and two support staff members were there. There were seven transition classes and fourteen other classes. SMK Taman Kosas students moved to SMK Tasek Permai. The first Parent-Teacher Association meeting was on April 2, 1995. The first PMR exam took place in 1997. The first SPM exam was in 1998.

Lee Yoke Kum was the first principal. He retired on May 23, 2001. Ismail bin Musa became the second principal on July 1, 2001. At that time, there were 92 teachers and 11 support staff. The student population grew to 1785. SMK Tasek Permai became a Grade A school on June 1, 2002.

Over the years, SMK Tasek Permai has seen many principals. Zaini bt Mohamad Zain followed Ismail bin Musa in 2005. A-Inah bt Baharom took over in 2006. In 2009, Rohaya Bt Sharifin became the principal. Che Ratni binti Muhamad then led the school from 2012. Rabiya Binti Mohamad Sultan became principal in 2015. Mashudi Bin Khailani served from October 2019. Currently, Sarbanun Bt. Ismail is the principal since March 2023.

SMK Tasek Permai continues to be a beacon of education. It shapes young minds in Ampang. The school has a rich history. It offers a vibrant learning environment. SMK Tasek Permai plays a vital role in the community. In 2009, the school had 501 male students and 512 female students. There were 78 teachers.
