Standing before this impressive building, it’s hard to imagine the history it holds. This is the Supreme Command Headquarters, a place that has witnessed the dramatic shifts in Thailand’s military landscape. Once called the Supreme Command Headquarters, the name changed in 2008 to reflect its expanded role as the joint headquarters of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. The building is the hub of Thailand’s defense, housing various departments and directorates under the responsibility of the Ministry of Defence. But its story goes back further.
Before the Supreme Command Headquarters became a permanent fixture, it was a temporary position called into existence twice: once, during the Franco-Thai War in 1940 and again during World War II. The headquarters was commanded by Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsonggram, a figure of significant historical influence. It was King Bhumibol Adulyadej, however, who permanently established the Supreme Command Headquarters in 1957 when he appointed Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat as Supreme Commander. This marked a turning point in the organization of Thailand’s defense forces.
Originally, the headquarters was tasked with the command and execution of military operations in wartime. In peacetime, it was responsible for maintaining military readiness. And most importantly, it guarded the security of the Royal Family and the King. Nowadays, the Supreme Command Headquarters also commands Thai forces overseas in peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance operations.
This building is more than just a government office, it’s a symbol of Thailand’s military power and history. It’s a place where decisions are made, troops are deployed, and national security is secured. As you stand in front of the Supreme Command Headquarters, take a moment to contemplate the immense responsibility that rests upon this building’s shoulders and its vital role in shaping Thailand’s destiny.
