Originally, this site held not a grand mansion, but a medieval fortress. In the 12th century, the Döring family, knights of considerable influence, constructed their stronghold. Imagine a mighty moated castle perched atop an eight-meter-high hill, its residential tower a watchful sentinel against encroaching enemies. Haus Döring wasn’t just a military installation. It was a self-sufficient estate, complete with a watermill (which still exists today) and a bustling farm on an outer bailey. The Dörerings held sway here for generations, but their reign wasn’t without its trials. Haus Döring was a pawn in power plays, conquered, pledged, sold, and even ravaged by fire multiple times. The medieval castle, scarred by conflict and the passage of time, eventually met its end. In 1727, a new chapter began. A two-story, three-axis Baroque mansion rose from the old foundation walls of the castle, obscuring the medieval remnants beneath a cloak of elegance. The echoes of the past, however, refuse to be completely silenced. Descend into the cellar vaults of Haus Döring and you encounter tangible links to its medieval origins: large-format foundation bricks from the 12th-century castle, whispering stories of a time long past. Since 1922, Haus Döring has been a private residence, owned by the Anton Klümper family, guardians of a legacy spanning centuries.
