Envision a time long before the towering skyscrapers of Gurugram, when the area was a patchwork of villages and ancient ruins. Here, in the heart of Jharsa, stands Gurudwara Jharsa. Gurudwara Jharsa may not boast the grandeur of some of Delhi’s more famous gurudwaras, but it holds a quiet significance, a connection to a turbulent and fascinating past. The history of Jharsa, and by extension Gurudwara Jharsa, intertwines with the story of Begum Samru, a remarkable woman who rose from obscurity to become a powerful ruler in 18th-century India. Before the British established their civil lines and cantonments, Jharsa served as Begum Samru’s principal cantonment. Remnants of her fort compound, though sadly lost to encroachment, once stood as a testament to her power. The village itself predates the city of Gurugram, going back to medieval times and existing as a paragana during the Mughal and British colonial eras. A poignant echo of this era rests in the nearby Mohyal Colony. There, within a quiet park, lies the tomb of Major Jean Etienne, a French soldier in Begum Samru’s army. Known as the “French Memorial of Jharsa,” Etienne’s tomb speaks to the diverse influences that shaped this region. While the exact connection between Begum Samru and the Gurudwara remains unclear from available historical records, her influence on Jharsa undoubtedly shaped the environment in which the Gurudwara eventually emerged. Gurudwara Jharsa serves as a reminder of the layers of history beneath the modern city. It stands as a quiet space for reflection. Here, amidst the hustle of modern Gurugram, you can connect with the spirit of a bygone era, a time of powerful rulers, loyal soldiers, and the enduring faith of the Sikh community.
