Why was Camden High School nicknamed the “Castle on the Hill”? Right here, at the intersection of Park and Baird Boulevards, once stood a magnificent structure that truly earned that moniker. Camden High School’s story begins in 1918, born from the burgeoning population that outgrew its predecessor, the Camden Manual Training and High School. This new school quickly became a cornerstone of the community, its graduates populating the ranks of city officials and achieving success in various fields. Camden High School wasn’t just a building; it was a symbol of the city’s hopes and dreams. The architects, Arthur Truscott and Paul Armon Davis III, poured their talent into creating a school that resembled a grand English Tudor castle. Truscott, already known for his work on the Broadway School and the Security Trust Building in Camden, designed a three-story structure complete with imposing white columns and striking turrets. From its elevated position, the school offered breathtaking views of the city and the Philadelphia skyline on a clear day. The school thrived during the early 20th century, witnessing a diverse student body passing through its hallowed halls. Alumni like Ryan Bates, Class of 1976, remember the school as the “heart and soul of Camden”. He, along with Delia Ford Brown, Class of 1960, cherished the memories made within those walls. Brown recalls a time of vibrant ethnic diversity and a celebrated basketball team featuring stars like Golden “Sunny” Sunkett and Ronald “Itchy” Smith. But time, as it often does, brought change. By the 2010s, the grand old building was showing its age. The “Castle on the Hill” was deemed too costly to renovate. Despite passionate protests, petitions, and a strong social media campaign to save the school, the decision was made to demolish and rebuild. The last class graduated in June 2017, and the demolition began, each falling brick a pang of loss for alumni like Bates. While some mourned the loss of the physical structure, others looked to the future with a mix of sadness and excitement. A new, modern Camden High School is rising on the same site, a $133 million project that promises state-of-the-art facilities for 1,200 students. The new campus will house four separate schools, offering diverse options for students within the public school system. Although the “Castle on the Hill” is gone, its legacy lives on in the memories of its alumni and in the promise of the new school that is taking its place.
