“A gateway to the Redlands” it was once called. Capalaba. That’s what we’re exploring today.

Capalaba isn’t just a suburb. It’s a living history book. Its name itself whispers of the past. Did you know it’s believed to come from the Yugarabul word for ringtail possum? These furry creatures once thrived in this very area. Long before European settlers arrived.

European settlement began in the 1850s. Farmers lumberjacks and sawmill operators were the pioneers. They carved out a life amongst the native bushland. Imagine the challenges they faced. Clearing land building homes and establishing businesses.

The Rocks Crossing a ford across Tingalpa Creek played a crucial role. It was part of the route from Brisbane to Cleveland. Until 1874 when a bridge was built. This bridge improved transportation. It also made Capalaba a more accessible settlement.

The area was once divided into three small communities. The Rocks the Sawmills and Upper Tingalpa. A school was desired but there was much debate over its location. It took a while to find a site that pleased everyone. The school finally opened in 1880. It had 22 students.

The opening of the Cleveland railway line in 1889 was a turning point. It meant Capalaba was no longer the main route to Cleveland. This impacted the local economy. The sawmills closed. Student numbers at the school dwindled.

However Capalaba persevered. The Great Depression brought an influx of people seeking cheaper housing. The school reopened in 1924. The Leslie Harrison Dam completed in 1968 provided freshwater. This spurred significant growth.

The 1950s saw Queensland’s first drive-in movie theatre open in Capalaba. A magical place where families enjoyed entertainment under the stars. It operated until 1979. It was then replaced by the Capalaba Park Shopping Centre.

Today Capalaba is a bustling suburb. It has major shopping centres. It also has thriving communities and schools. From humble beginnings it has become a significant part of the Redlands Coast. Its history is interwoven with the land its people and its unique past. It reminds us of the resilience and growth of a community. It’s more than just a suburb. It’s a journey through time. A testament to the past. A vibrant present. And a promising future.
