Imagine mudflats stretching before you. This is not the bustling harbor you see today. This is Timms’ Point and Landing.

Timms’ Point and Landing marks a place of significant change. It highlights the early development of Los Angeles harbor. Let’s delve into its history.

In 1852, Augustus W. Timms, a German immigrant, acquired Sepulveda’s Landing. It was a humble spot on the mudflats. Timms transformed it. He built a wharf to facilitate shipping. He also added a warehouse for storage. Corrals were erected for livestock. These improvements supported stagecoach lines running to Los Angeles.

Timms’ Point quickly became a vital hub. It supported commerce between the harbor and the growing city. Over time, houses and a hotel appeared. Even a bathhouse offered respite to travelers. The San Pedro & Los Angeles Railway reached Timms’ Point in the 1880s. This boosted commerce even more.

Beyond commerce, Timms’ Wharf was a recreation spot. Locals enjoyed clamming on the mudflats. Imagine families gathering here. They sought shellfish and enjoyed the coastal air.

Augustus W. Timms passed away in 1888. In 1902, his widow sold Timms’ Landing to the Southern Pacific Railroad. This marked a new chapter in the harbor’s evolution.

The area has changed drastically in the last century. Today, Timms’ Point and Wharf are underwater. The landscape is unrecognizable.

However, a marker near Berth 73 commemorates Timms’ Landing. This plaque, placed in 1993, marks a spot near where Timms’ Landing played a vital role. It reminds us of the harbor’s humble beginnings. It stands as a testament to Augustus Timms’ vision. His entrepreneurial spirit shaped early Los Angeles. This spot preserves his legacy. Timms’ Point lives on in memory.
