Considering a building that embodies faith and architectural grandeur. This is Congregation Ohab Zedek. It stands at 118 West 95th Street. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Modern Orthodox Jewish community in New York City.

Founded in 1873, Congregation Ohab Zedek is not just a synagogue. It is a vibrant center of Jewish life. It is known for its lively and youthful congregation. People often call it OZ. Its full name is the First Hungarian Congregation Ohab Zedek.

Originally located on the Lower East Side, Ohab Zedek first built a synagogue building at 70 Columbia Street in 1881. The congregation then moved to 172 Norfolk Street. This building is now the Angel Orensanz Center.

In the early 20th century, Ohab Zedek sought a new home. In 1906-07, they erected a monumental building on 116th Street in Harlem. This new space blended Gothic influences with Moorish Revival architecture.

The renowned cantor Yossele Rosenblatt graced the congregation with his voice. He served from 1911 to 1926 and again in 1929. His presence added to the synagogue’s rich cultural tapestry.

In 1926, Congregation Ohab Zedek made its final move to its present location. The 116th Street property was sold. It later became the Baptist Temple Church.

The current synagogue building is a sight to behold. Designed by Charles B. Myers, its Moorish Revival architecture captivates visitors. Inside, magnificent Mudéjar-style plasterwork adorns the interior. This demonstrates incredible craftsmanship.

The building’s architectural significance led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. This recognition solidifies Ohab Zedek’s place in history.

In the 21st century, Ohab Zedek became known for attracting Orthodox Jewish singles. Its services and programs fostered a strong sense of community.

To commemorate its history, the congregation published a book in 2005. Chaim Steinberger, a member of the congregation, wrote “First Hungarian Congregation Ohab Zedek.” This book chronicles the congregation’s journey. It also highlights its contributions to Jewish life in New York City.

Today, Rabbi Allen Schwartz serves as the Senior Rabbi. Rabbi Jack Varon is the assistant Rabbi. Chad Hopkovitz is the Executive Director. They guide the congregation. They ensure its continued vibrancy.

Congregation Ohab Zedek stands as a symbol of faith. It represents community and architectural beauty. Its history is a testament to the enduring spirit of Judaism in New York City.
