A gasp escaped someone’s lips. “Eleven meters wider than the Blue Bridge? During its construction?”

Welcome to the Novo-Konyushenny Bridge. This seemingly unassuming span across the Griboedov Canal holds a fascinating story. It’s far more than just a pathway. It’s a silent witness to Saint Petersburg’s dramatic history.

Its predecessor a wooden structure built in the 1880s served a remarkable purpose. It wasn’t just a simple crossing. It was a crucial element in the construction of the Church of the Savior on Blood. Imagine the scale of that project. That wooden bridge swelled to an astonishing 115 meters wide. It was a temporary behemoth. A testament to the ambition of the era. Once the cathedral was completed in 1907 the bridge remained. It took on a new name: the Church of the Resurrection of Christ Bridge.

The October Revolution brought sweeping changes. The bridge’s name was altered to reflect the new political climate. “Bridge-overlap” a temporary placeholder. It lacked the grandeur of its previous monikers.

In 1975 a new ferroconcrete bridge replaced the old wood. This new bridge received yet another name: the Grinevsky Bridge. It was named after Ignacy Hryniewiecki. This man is remembered as the assassin of Tsar Alexander II. He threw a bomb near where the modern bridge stands.

Finally in 1998 the bridge gained its current name. The Novo-Konyushenny Bridge a nod to the nearby Stable Square. This name offers a more permanent sense of place. It anchors the bridge to its surroundings.

Today as we stand here on the Novo-Konyushenny Bridge reflect on its transformations. It’s more than just a way to cross the canal. It mirrors the city’s own evolution. It reflects the layers of history. Each name a chapter in Saint Petersburg’s story. Its story continues unfolding. Each passing footfall adds another moment. It’s a testament to resilience and change. A bridge between past and present.
