Vasily Ivanovich Kuznetsov was born in Ust-Osolka in 1894. He came from a working-class family. His military career began in April 1915 when he was drafted into the Russian Army. In 1916 he completed officer training. By July, he was a second lieutenant.
After the October Revolution Kuznetsov joined the Red Army in August 1918. He became a commanding officer in October 1923. He joined the Communist Party in 1928. His dedication led him to advanced officer training. In 1936 he graduated from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in Moscow. By October 1936 he commanded the 99th Rifle Division. In July 1937 he commanded the 16th Rifle Corps.
Kuznetsov’s early wartime experience came with the invasion of Poland in 1939. He was the commanding officer of the Vitebsk and Polotsk Army Groups. He was promoted to lieutenant general in 1940. When Germany attacked in 1941, his 3rd Army was overwhelmed in Byelorussia. Despite the setback Kuznetsov escaped. In August 1941 he commanded the 21st Army. It was decimated during the Battle of Kiev.
In November 1941 Kuznetsov commanded the 1st Shock Army. He participated in the Battle of Moscow. In 1942 he led actions at Demyansk. July 1942 saw him in command of the 63rd Army near Stalingrad. This unit later became the 1st Guards Army. His contributions to the Battle of Stalingrad earned him the Order of Suvorov 1st Class.
December 1943 marked his appointment as deputy commander of the 1st Baltic Front. He played a vital role in Operation Bagration. He also helped in lifting the siege of Leningrad. In March 1945 Kuznetsov took command of the 3rd Shock Army. This was after the 1st Baltic Front was disbanded. His troops stormed the Reichstag during the Battle of Berlin. For his wartime efforts he was named a Hero of the Soviet Union.
After the war Kuznetsov attended the Voroshilov Military Academy. He graduated in 1948. From 1953 to 1957 he commanded the Volga Military District. He then served in the Ministry of Defense. Kuznetsov retired in 1960. He passed away in Moscow in 1964. He was buried here in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
