Did Noah Mason ever imagine, as he hauled stones to build Sands Point Lighthouse in 1809, that he’d witness history unfold from its very top? Sands Point Lighthouse, a sturdy octagonal tower of brownstone, wasn’t just a beacon for ships navigating the treacherous waters between Long Island Sound and the East River. It was Mason’s home, his post, and his window to the world. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, Mason had traded his musket for a builder’s trowel, securing the contract to construct the fourth lighthouse on Long Island. He completed it in 1809 and became its first keeper. The grand opening was a festive occasion, a celebration of safety and community, attended by prominent families and even Senator Samuel L. Mitchell, the lighthouse’s champion. The structure stood 40 feet tall, its thick stone base a testament to its enduring purpose. Eleven lamps and reflectors, arranged on two tables, cast a fixed white beam across the water, guiding mariners away from the perilous Execution Rocks. Years later, in 1856, a Fresnel lens was installed, its intricate prisms transforming the light into a rhythmic flash every 30 seconds. But Sands Point Lighthouse offered more than just a navigational aid. It offered a front-row seat to history. In 1814, during the War of 1812, Mason witnessed a naval battle between American gunboats and the British frigate Acosta. He watched the exchange of cannon fire, the desperate maneuvers, the unfolding drama from his lofty perch. He remained the keeper until 1841, his life intertwined with the lighthouse’s steady rhythm. Even after its decommissioning in 1922, the Sands Point Lighthouse continued to stand tall. It became part of a grand estate, owned by socialite Alva Belmont and later by William Randolph Hearst. Though its light was extinguished, its legacy remained, a testament to its builder, its keeper, and the stories it silently witnessed. Today, a skeletal tower offshore carries the navigational burden, but the original Sands Point Lighthouse remains, a proud sentinel overlooking the Sound, whispering tales of the past to those who know where to listen.
