Have you ever heard the phrase “The Pride of Johore”? It’s a nickname for a place that’s deeply woven into the history and culture of Johor Bahru – the English College Johore Bahru. Standing right before you, this majestic old school was established in 1914, initially under the tutelage of two European teachers, Mr. Morrison and Mr. Holman. They taught a small group of just 21 selected students who were pioneers, forming the nucleus of the current English College, also known as Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar.

The system of education mirrored that of distinguished British schools. English College became the template for other English medium schools in Johor Bahru. From humble beginnings with European teachers, the school evolved, eventually integrating locally trained teachers. The school was moved to its present site in the late 1930s, with the official opening of its new building taking place in 1931. The Japanese occupation of Malaya from 1941 to 1945 interrupted this period of progress. The school was converted into a factory and even served as a military hospital.

After the war ended and the school reopened in 1946, under the guidance of Mr. H. L. Hill, the school regained its prestige. In the early 1960s, the school was officially renamed to Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar in honor of the Father of Johor, Sultan Abu Bakar. The school anthem was first performed in 1969, with lyrics written by En. Yusof bin Karto and music composed by Mr. Lim Teck Siang. The heart of the school, the original rambling white blocks that made up the forefront, still remain today. The school then proudly embarked on its record of academic excellence, producing many students of high calibre and intellect.

The school’s most recognizable feature is its pseudo English Classic Victorian architecture. Over the years, many additions have been made to improve its facilities, including a sports complex, library, an engineering block, and even a mini auditorium. Throughout its history, English College Johore Bahru, a symbol of academic excellence, has truly become the heart and soul of Johor Bahru.
