Timeless bronze stands before you. This is the Ludwig Yorck Statue. It’s a monument to a remarkable Prussian general. Generalfeldmarschall Johann David Ludwig Graf Yorck von Wartenburg. He was a pivotal figure in the Napoleonic Wars. His name is synonymous with a daring act of defiance. An act that altered the course of Prussian history.

The statue itself is a masterpiece. Christian Daniel Rauch sculpted it. It showcases Yorck in his military regalia. The details are exquisite. From the meticulous folds of his uniform to the resolute set of his jaw. The bronze gleams. It reflects the surrounding cityscape.

Yorck’s story is one of courage and conviction. Born in Potsdam in 1759 he rose through the ranks of the Prussian army. He proved a skilled military tactician. He showed bravery on the battlefield. His early career however was marked by conflict. He even faced imprisonment for insubordination.

But it was during the War of the Sixth Coalition that Yorck’s legacy was truly cemented. In 1812 Prussia was allied with Napoleon. Yorck was part of the auxiliary corps supporting Napoleon’s disastrous invasion of Russia. However witnessing the French army’s devastating retreat Yorck saw an opportunity. He made a bold move. He signed the Convention of Tauroggen. This armistice declared the Prussian corps neutral effectively switching sides. This was a gamble with enormous consequences. He essentially defied Napoleon and his own king.

This action was not without risk. It could have cost him his life. The Prussian Court was initially furious. They ordered Yorck’s suspension and court-martial. However events unfolded quickly. The Treaty of Kalisz aligned Prussia with the Allies. Yorck’s bold decision had become a stroke of genius. His act sparked a wave of patriotic fervor across Prussia.

On March 17 1813 Yorck entered Berlin triumphantly. The city erupted in celebration. That same day the King declared war on France. Yorck played a key role in the subsequent Allied victories. He participated in battles like Katzbach Leipzig and Laon. He ultimately saw the storming of Paris.

His military contributions were immense. His daring decision to switch alliances shifted the balance of power. It was a decisive moment in the war. Ludwig van Beethoven even composed the Yorckscher Marsch in his honor.

The statue stands as a testament to Yorck’s bravery. It is a powerful symbol. It’s a reminder of his courageous act. It embodies the spirit of defiance that changed the course of history. A quiet hero. A pivotal figure. A symbol of Prussian resilience. This is Ludwig Yorck.
