“A boar’s head trophy?” Picture the scene before us. This is the Meleager Sculpture. It stands as a testament to both ancient myth and artistic skill.
The Meleager Sculpture captures a moment from Greek mythology. Meleager was a hero. He famously hunted the Calydonian boar. This fearsome beast had terrorized the land.
This statue represents a copy of a Roman sculpture. The original is attributed to Skopas. He was a renowned sculptor from the fourth century BCE. The Roman copy dates back to the third century CE. It is known as the “Berlin Meleager”.
The Berlin Meleager is housed in the Altes Museum in Berlin. Our Meleager Sculpture is based on this famous work. The statue shows a young hunter. He bears a spear. This is Meleager. He is depicted in traditional iconography.
Interestingly, one detail is missing from some versions. The faithful dog is absent from the hero’s side in some reproductions of the Meleager Sculpture.
One example of this is located in the Park of Miramare. Maximilian of Habsburg commissioned a zinc casting. It came from the Berlin factory of Moritz Geiss. This Meleager statue stands on a stone pedestal. It is at the rear of the parterre.
Maximilian made a specific decision about the dog. He chose to reproduce Meleager’s dog separately. It was placed near the Kaffehaus entrance. This was meant to symbolically guard it. Sadly, that statue of Meleager’s dog has been lost. However, it appears in twentieth-century photos of the park. They were taken during Duke Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta’s stay at Miramare.
The popularity of the Meleager Sculpture speaks volumes. Many copies and variations exist. They highlight the appeal of hunting figures to the Romans. These figures had heroizing connotations.
