Overlooking Chandler’s Pond stands Gallagher Memorial Park. A tranquil haven in the heart of Allston-Brighton. This wasn’t always a park though. Its story begins long ago with the excavation of Chandler’s Pond itself. A man-made marvel created for ice harvesting in the days before refrigeration. William C Strong a horticulturist and entrepreneur. He dug this pond. He was quite the businessman. He even had an ice house nearby.
The land changed hands many times. From Malcolm Chandler an experienced ice merchant who bought the pond and built a Greek Revival mansion overlooking it to Phineas B Smith who took possession after the Chandlers couldn’t keep up with mortgage payments. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston even owned the land for a time.
Then in 1941 at the urging of City Councilor Maurice Sullivan. Boston established Alice Gallagher Memorial Park. Named for the wife of long-time Boston City Councilor Edward Gallagher. Alice Gallagher dedicated her life to charitable work in the Allston-Brighton community. The park became a gift to the community. A lasting tribute to her service.
Today Gallagher Memorial Park offers a stunning visual amenity. It is a place for strolling wildlife observation and relaxation. It’s more than just a park.
