Masjid As Salaam

In the vibrant tapestry of Port Louis, nestled among bustling streets and vibrant markets, stands Masjid As Salaam. This mosque, a beacon of faith and cultural heritage, invites us to explore its rich history. Masjid As Salaam, formerly known as the “Mosque of the Arabs,” has graced this city since the 1850s. Its architecture is a beautiful fusion of Indian, Creole, and Islamic styles, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Mauritius. The mosque’s story begins with a group of Muslim merchants who, in 1852, purchased two properties on Queen Street. Their vision was to create a dedicated space for worship for the growing Muslim community. Initially, a small mosque was built on the site, serving as a temporary place of prayer. It wasn’t until a later expansion, between 1878 and 1895, that Masjid As Salaam took its present form. This expansion involved the acquisition of several surrounding lots, generously donated by Muslim merchants. The original mosque was thoughtfully incorporated into the new design, becoming the main prayer hall, beautifully illuminated by glass chandeliers. As you stand before Masjid As Salaam, take a moment to appreciate the tranquil courtyard. At its center stands an Indian almond tree, a silent witness to the mosque’s evolution. This tree was already present on the land when it was first acquired and continues to provide shade and serenity to this day. Masjid As Salaam also holds a unique historical distinction. It houses the remains of Jamal Shah, a revered pir from Kutch, India. His marble tomb, located next to the mosque, serves as a place of reverence for visitors.
