Hidden within San Donato Milanese lies Cascina del Ronco. It’s not just a farm. It’s a time capsule. Cascina del Ronco whispers stories of centuries past. Its name, meaning “cleared land,” hints at its origins. The land was once a dense forest, cleared by the Romans for cultivation. Imagine those Roman soldiers, transforming the wilderness into fertile fields.

Cascina del Ronco’s story is intertwined with Danese Figliodoni, a powerful figure in 16th-century Milan. He acquired the land in 1559 and transformed it. He commissioned the construction of a canal, the Cavo Danese, to irrigate the land. He built a mill, a main house, and a farmhouse. He invested heavily in the farm, adding stables and facilities for dairy production. Figliodoni’s vision shaped Cascina del Ronco into a thriving agricultural center.

The property changed hands over the years. In 1739, it came under the ownership of the Cagnola family. Later, Luigi Cagnola, a prominent neoclassical architect, sold the property in 1792. In the mid-19th century, the Luogo Pio della Misericordia commissioned architect Giorgio Manzi to redesign the farm. Manzi’s design gave Cascina del Ronco its current form. He incorporated existing structures like the mill. He created a symmetrical layout, reflecting the principles of Palladian architecture. His design transformed Cascina del Ronco into a model of modern agriculture.

Cascina del Ronco’s story continues into the present day. The Villa family arrived in 1936 and continues to farm the land. They have witnessed the changing landscape of agriculture. The farm has faced challenges. A devastating fire in 1990 destroyed the stables. A heavy snowfall in 2009 caused a building collapse. Despite these setbacks, Cascina del Ronco endures.

The farm is a testament to its rich history and architectural significance. It stands as a reminder of Milan’s agricultural heritage. Cascina del Ronco is more than just a farm; it’s a living story. It speaks of Roman ingenuity, the ambition of a powerful chancellor, and the vision of a renowned architect. It is a place where the past and present intertwine.
