A forgotten motor rescue boat. That was the Jöhnk Werft’s first creation. Can you imagine the humble beginnings of this shipyard? Right here on the Harburger Schlossinsel. This isn’t just any shipyard. It’s a piece of Hamburg’s maritime history. Founded in 1933 the Jöhnk Werft rose from the ashes of the defunct Schlosswerft during the Great Depression. Two shipbuilders Scheel and Jöhnk along with their sons saw opportunity. They built a wooden shed on this very ground. They started small constructing small vessels. Two slipways were added. The workforce expanded to 25 men.
The Jöhnk Werft’s work diversified. They built dismountable passenger ships for Germany’s inland waterways. They crafted bunker boats harbor launches barges. They even exported boats to Africa. World War II brought a shift in focus. Repairs and modifications for the Kriegsmarine became the priority. The shipyard produced a series of assault boats M-boats landing crafts and decontamination vehicles.
After the war’s destruction the Jöhnk Werft rebuilt. They focused on new construction. They built more barges tugboats bunker boats ferries. They even created vessels for government agencies. The shipyard expanded. In 1953 they built their own 52-meter long floating dock. This dock boasted a 750-ton capacity. This was a significant investment. It symbolized the Werft’s growth and ambition.
More buildings were added. By 1957 the workforce reached 150 men. The number decreased to 116 by 1977. Today the Jöhnk Werft focuses on repairs maintenance and occasional conversions. It’s a testament to enduring craftsmanship. After several changes in ownership and a bankruptcy in 2006. Owner Walter Jöhnk orchestrated a rescue. Rudolf Sommerfeld of the Sommerfeld Inland Shipping Office took over in 2006. He uses the Jöhnk Werft for the maintenance of his fleet. His ships navigate the Elbe to Magdeburg the Mittelland Canal to the Ruhr and the Weser to Brake. They also handle container transport on the Lower Elbe. This is a shipyard with resilience. It adapted to changing times. It overcame adversity. It continues to thrive. The Jöhnk Werft is a true symbol of Hamburg’s enduring maritime spirit. A quiet giant in Harburg.
