Established in 2010 the South Asian University stands as a beacon of academic excellence. It’s a testament to regional cooperation. Eight South Asian nations pooled resources to create this center of learning. The university initially operated from a temporary campus. This was at Akbar Bhawan in Delhi. However since February 2023 it has a permanent home. This is a sprawling 100-acre campus in Maidan Garhi South Delhi.
The idea for the South Asian University was born at the 13th SAARC Summit. This was in Dhaka in 2005. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh proposed the ambitious project. The goal was to provide world-class education. This would be for students and researchers from across the SAARC region. The inter-governmental agreement was signed at the 14th SAARC Summit. India generously provided the majority of funding. This was around 79 percent of the total cost until 2014.
The first academic session began in August 2010. Two postgraduate programs were offered. These were in Economics and Computer Science. Today the South Asian University boasts a wider range of programs. These include Masters and MPhil/PhD programs in various fields. These are Applied Mathematics Biotechnology Computer Science Economics International Relations Legal Studies and Sociology. Degrees from the university are recognized by all SAARC member nations.
The university’s Maidan Garhi campus is impressive. It houses faculty buildings hostels playgrounds and residential apartments. Even a club. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. It sits adjacent to IGNOU and the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary. The campus design was created by a Nepalese firm. The firm was chosen after a regional competition.
