Before us stands Yonsei Central Baptist Church. Its story is one of faith and perseverance. The church faced numerous challenges from its humble beginnings.
In 1986, Yonsei Central Baptist Church started in Yeonheedong. The location presented several problems. Public transport was limited. The church was far from surrounding amenities. The basement location was damp and moldy. The smell hindered people from attending and breathing easily. Rainwater flooded the sanctuary.
Pastor Yoon believed God would guide people to the right place. He began holding monthly revival meetings. Members became filled with the Holy Spirit. The church began to grow rapidly. They soon needed a new space.
The congregation volunteered offerings for a new building. They purchased land in Sungsandong. However, they couldn’t build there. The area was reserved for a park and water system.
In 1990, they leased space in Mangwondong. Within a year, they outgrew this location too. The congregation needed larger premises again.
In 1992, Pastor Yoon learned about a church in Noryangjin. It was planning to relocate. The building was large enough for Yonsei’s growing congregation. It was also easily accessible by public transport.
Pastor Yoon negotiated with the senior pastor. Two other churches had already made offers. The Yonsei congregation fasted and prayed. They wanted the property.
The Noryangjin church leaders made a new deal. They asked for a large down payment. The remaining amount was due in two installments within four months. Pastor Yoon agreed to the terms.
The congregation gathered with special offerings before signing the contract. The amount exceeded the required down payment. The Noryangjin church allowed Yonsei Church to move in after the down payment.
After moving to Noryangjin, Yonsei Central Baptist Church purchased the Hindolsan Retreat Center in 1996. They had been renting it for years. The retreat center hosted seminars for pastors’ wives. Attendance grew rapidly over the years.
The church expanded the hall and accommodation facilities. This covered 150000 sq ft and was completed in 1997. An accommodation facility for pastors was built in 2003. The retreat center served pastors and church members worldwide.
An additional 11000 sq ft was added in Noryangjin. It provided more space for small group meetings. The church needed a larger premises again.
In 1999, a building committee was established. The committee assessed over eighty possible sites. In 2001, they purchased property in Gungdong.
Construction began in 2003. Church members prayed every night for the building. They fasted and prayed for three days before completion.
Yonsei Central Baptist Church dedicated its new building on May 5, 2005. This was the church’s 19th anniversary. The new building covers 427000 sq ft. The main building is a circular five-story structure. It has a diameter of 100m. Special construction technology was used. This allowed for a large open space inside.
The sanctuary features a digital network system. It enables live broadcasting for internet and satellite services. It also has interpretation rooms and cinema acoustics. Parking lots can accommodate up to 1000 vehicles.
The Education Center was built in 2006. It serves the community with a kindergarten and language institute. The World Vision Center was built in 2010. It features banquet rooms and chapels.
Yonsei Central Baptist Church upgraded its AV systems. They deployed an ESD Lumens LED display. They upgraded to L-Acoustics K2 line array speakers. Ikegami cameras record sermons. The church broadcasts content on digital platforms.
Yonsei Central Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. Its journey reflects the dedication of its members. It shows their commitment to serving God and the community.
