Look around you at the sprawling landscape of the Ramona Grasslands Preserve. This 3521-acre preserve is a treasure. It is nestled in the Santa Maria Valley. The valley lies between coastal mesas and the Peninsular mountain ranges. Not all of the acreage is open to the public though. Some land is closed to protect sensitive resources.

Limited cattle grazing still occurs in parts of the Ramona Grasslands Preserve. This is part of the preserve’s rangeland management. The County and The Nature Conservancy work together to manage the preserve. Their goal is to balance preservation with recreation. They maintain the natural beauty and biological resources.

The Ramona Grasslands Preserve is home to hundreds of plant and animal species. There are 408 plant species. Sixteen of them are considered special status. This includes San Diego thornmint and spreading navarretia. The preserve also supports 23 butterfly species, 21 reptile species and 37 mammals. Over a hundred types of birds live here.
