“Opens at 10 AM” says a sign. But the story of Sri Angalaparameswari Aalayam begins long before the doors open. This Hindu temple in Chennai is dedicated to the goddess Angala Parameswari.

Sri Angalaparameswari Aalayam’s history goes back centuries. Some 350 years ago, it is said that the goddess incarnated under a tree. This very spot is where the temple stands today.

Originally, it was a small temple built by devotees in the 1950s. A trust was formed to expand and maintain Sri Angalaparameswari Aalayam in 2001. Major renovations followed, and a Kumbhashakam was performed in August 2002.

Sri Angalaparameswari Aalayam is not just a local temple. It is considered a Kula Deviam or Family God for many communities in Tamil Nadu. People from all over come to seek blessings here.

The main deity is Arulmegu Sri Angala Parameswari Amman. But there are other important figures too. Shrines honor Vinayakar, Virabadrar, Irulan, and more. You’ll also find PeriAndavar, Perinayagi, Pavadairayan, Periachi, Veran, and Sapth Kannigal.

British records show that Sri Angalaparameswari Aalayam has been around for over 100 years. Legend says that fishermen once lived here. When an epidemic struck, they prayed to the goddess. Sri Angalaparameswari appeared in a dream and asked them to build a temple. After the temple was built, the disease vanished.

The story of Angala Parameswari is fascinating. Lord Shiva once had a head stuck to his hand as punishment. Parvati, in the form of Angala Parameswari, helped him get rid of it. She crushed the head.

To celebrate this event, Mayana Kollai Thiruvizha takes place each year. Devotees dress as Angala Parameswari. They carry tridents and go to a graveyard. They offer sacrifices and throw rice mixed with blood into the crowd.

Special festivals mark the calendar here. Navarathri is celebrated with grand decorations. During the month of Aadi, devotees carry milk pots in procession. Abhishekam is performed. Valaikappu Vizha for Amman happens during Aadi Pooram. Masi Maham involves carrying the deity to the sea.

Sri Angalaparameswari Aalayam stands as a testament to faith. It is a place of history and vibrant traditions. Its doors open at 10 AM, but its story is timeless.
