“The Protected Mosque”. Does the name of this mosque spark your curiosity? This is Masjid al-Muhata. Let me share its story with you. We stand at a place of deep historical and spiritual meaning for Muslims in Medina.

Masjid al-Muhata is one of Medina’s many significant mosques. It is a testament to the city’s rich Islamic heritage. Medina is one of Islam’s holiest cities. It draws millions of visitors each year. They come to connect with their faith. They explore the historical sites.

Before Islam Medina was known as Yathrib. The Prophet Muhammad migrated here from Mecca in 622 CE. This event is known as the Hijrah. It marks a turning point in Islamic history. Medina became the first capital of the Muslim caliphate. It was a center for the early Muslim community.

Medina is home to three prominent mosques. These are Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, Quba Mosque, and Masjid al-Qiblatayn. The Prophet’s Mosque or Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is incredibly important in Islam. It houses Muhammad’s tomb. Quba Mosque is Islam’s oldest mosque.

Much of the Quran was revealed in Medina. This fact alone shows its importance. Medina has seen many changes in power. Jewish-Arabian tribes ruled it first. Then came the Aws and Khazraj tribes. Muhammad and the Rashidun Caliphate followed. Later the Umayyads the Abbasids the Mamluks Ottomans and finally the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia governed it.

Tourists visit Medina for Ziyarah. They also visit other religious sites. These include Mount Uhud, Al-Baqi’ cemetery and the Seven Mosques. The Saudi government has unfortunately destroyed some historical structures in both Medina and Mecca.

Medina plays a vital role in Islamic eschatology. Some believe it will be abandoned before the end of the world. Others believe it is protected from plague and the False Messiah.

Today Medina is a modern city. Yet it preserves its Islamic heritage. The city has expanded. It now features modern infrastructure. This includes an international airport and ring roads.

The Haramain high-speed railway connects Medina and Mecca. This makes travel easier for pilgrims. While the old city is off-limits to non-Muslims Medina has a growing number of expatriate workers.

Sadly much of Medina’s historic architecture has been demolished. This was done to make way for new construction around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Despite these changes Medina remains a deeply sacred place. It is a place full of history. It holds great significance for Muslims worldwide.

So as we stand here before Masjid al-Muhata let us remember the rich tapestry of Medina’s past. Let us appreciate its present significance and contemplate its future. It is a city that continues to inspire and uplift millions. It remains a beacon of faith and history.
