Magnificent red sandstone walls stretch before us. This is Agra Fort. It is also known as Agra’s Red Fort. This historical fort whispers tales of Mughal emperors and fierce battles. Are you ready to step back in time?

Agra Fort’s story is one of power, love, and betrayal. Mughal emperor Humayun was crowned here in 1530. Later, Emperor Akbar renovated the fort, completing it in 1573. For decades it was the main residence of the Mughal rulers.

Imagine this place bustling with royal life. Courtiers stroll through elaborate gardens. Emperors address their subjects. Agra was the heart of the Mughal empire. In 1638, the capital shifted to Delhi.

Before the Mughals, the Chauhan Rajputs held the fort. Sikandar Khan Lodi captured it in the 15th century. He moved his capital to Agra. After the first battle of Panipat in 1526, the Mughals seized the fort.

Akbar recognized the fort’s strategic importance. He rebuilt it with red sandstone. It came from the Barauli area in Rajasthan. Four thousand builders worked for eight years. They transformed the fort into what you see today.

Later, Shah Jahan transformed the fort again. He preferred white marble. He built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife. Unlike his grandfather, Shah Jahan favored white marble buildings.

Aurangzeb imprisoned his father Shah Jahan here in 1658. The fort was under Jat rulers for 13 years. They built the Ratan Singh ki Haveli. The Marathas then captured the fort. It changed hands many times. Finally, the British seized it in 1803.

Look at the impressive gates. The Delhi Gate faces the city. It is a masterpiece of Akbar’s time. The Lahore Gate is also known as Amar Singh Gate. The Delhi Gate was built around 1568. It enhanced security. It served as the king’s formal gate.

Consider the ingenious design of the Delhi Gate. A drawbridge once crossed the moat. The inner gateway, Hathi Pol, featured life-sized stone elephants. These added layers of security. The design prevented attackers from using elephants to break through.

Today, the Indian military uses the northern part of the fort. Tourists enter through the Amar Singh Gate. The fort was once filled with hundreds of buildings. Shah Jahan demolished some for his white marble palaces. The British destroyed many others for barracks.

Marvel at the Jahangir’s Hauz. This monolithic tank was used for bathing. The Shahjahani Mahal shows Shah Jahan’s transition to white marble.

The Ghaznin Gate has a fascinating story. The British brought it here in 1842. They falsely claimed it was from Mahmud of Ghazni’s tomb. It was said that he looted it from Somnath temple.

Think about Jahangir’s Chain of Justice. It allowed people to seek redress directly from the king.

Peer towards the Muthamman Burj. It is also known as Shah-Burj. Akbar used it for sunrise worship. Shah Jahan rebuilt it with white marble. He spent his final years imprisoned here. From here, he could view the Taj Mahal.

Imagine the Shish Mahal glittering with mirrors. These glass mosaics created a dazzling effect.

Agra Fort won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004. It continues to inspire awe. It reminds us of the power and artistry of the Mughal empire. Its walls have seen coronations, battles, and the rise and fall of dynasties. As we leave Agra Fort, remember its enduring legacy. It is a symbol of India’s rich and complex history.
