“Ya base Gujar, ya rahe ujjar.” Can you feel the weight of that curse hanging in the very air around Tughlakabad Baoli?

Welcome to Tughlakabad Baoli. This seemingly simple stepwell is steeped in a story of ambition, divine anger, and a curse that echoes through the centuries.

Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty, envisioned a magnificent capital. He started building Tughlaqabad Fort in 1321. His ambition knew no bounds. He ordered all laborers in Delhi to work solely on his fort. This decree angered the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya. The saint was building his own baoli. The fort construction halted work on the Sufi saint’s baoli.

Legend says Nizamuddin Auliya cursed Tughlaqabad. “Ya base Gujar, ya rahe ujjar” translates to “May this city be the abode of nomads or remain in wilderness.” The curse seems to have worked. Tughlaqabad never truly flourished. Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq died soon after. His son abandoned the fort.

But the story doesn’t end there. The baoli we stand before represents more than just a water source. It symbolizes defiance. It embodies the power of faith against imperial might. Imagine the scene. Laborers toiling by day on the fort. They worked secretly by night on the baoli. They were driven by devotion to their saint.

The king tried to stop the baoli’s construction by raising oil prices. Nizamuddin asked his disciple to light the lamps with baoli water. The disciple managed this incredible feat. The baoli was completed in 1321-22. Its waters were said to have miraculous powers.

Today, as you look at the Tughlakabad Baoli, consider its story. It is more than just stones and water. It is a testament to the clash between earthly power and spiritual strength. It is a reminder that sometimes the most enduring legacies are born not of grand ambition but of quiet resistance. The walls of Tughlaqabad Fort whisper tales of marching soldiers. The Tughlakabad Baoli echoes with the determination of those who dared to defy a king. Take a moment to listen closely. What do you hear? Perhaps it’s the faint echo of a curse or maybe the splash of water lit by faith.
