Alotenango a municipality in the Sacatepéquez department boasts a rich history dating back long before the Spanish arrived in 1524. The Popol Vuh mentions the town as Vucuc Caquix highlighting its significance in ancient Mayan culture. His detailed account in A Glimpse at Guatemala paints a vivid picture of the challenging climb through thick forests and loose soil. His journey from Alotenango serves as a reminder of the town’s role as a gateway to these majestic volcanoes.

Alotenango’s culture is a unique blend of Mayan and Hispanic traditions. The majority of inhabitants are Mayan Cakchiquel people although there’s debate about Nahua-speaking Pipil influences. Alotenango’s economy thrived on coffee production since the Justo Rufino Barrios era. The Capetillo farm a testament to this legacy started as a sugarcane plantation but later transitioned to coffee cultivation. By 1880 it boasted 200000 coffee trees its coffee winning the Grand Prize at the 1915 Universal Exhibition.
