Schenck’s Pond Dam. A quiet sentinel, nestled between two bodies of water. It’s more than just a dam. It plays a crucial role in the intricate water system of the area. Schenck’s Pond Dam sits between Norumbega Reservoir and a smaller basin, once a natural pond also called Schenck’s Pond. This smaller pond acts as a trim weir for the larger reservoir. The reservoir itself maintains a steady flow of water to the Hultman Aqueduct. It’s a vital cog in the machinery that keeps water flowing smoothly to Boston and its surrounding communities. Now, picture this: five massive earthen dikes holding back millions of gallons of water. That’s the Norumbega Reservoir, a sprawling body covering around 50 acres and holding a staggering 150 million gallons. Schenck’s Pond, 21 feet below the reservoir, is smaller but no less important. Between these two water bodies stands Schenck’s Pond Dam, a sturdy earthen dike. On top of this dike sits a gatehouse, a blend of granite, concrete, and steel. Designed by Boston architects Densmore, LeClear & Robbins, this gatehouse houses screens and a chlorination facility. In fact, Norumbega Reservoir is the main chlorination point for the entire water supply system. The screens in the gatehouse catch debris and any fish that might have traveled from the Wachusett Reservoir through the Hultman Aqueduct. On the south edge of Schenck’s Pond, you’ll find a chlorine storage building. The entire reservoir area is beautifully landscaped with conifers, a testament to the blend of functionality and aesthetics. Schenck’s Pond Dam might not be the most glamorous landmark. However, it offers a glimpse into the complex network of engineering and natural elements. These elements work together to provide a vital resource to a bustling metropolis.
