Ever wonder how a church could embody both tradition and a unique path within the Catholic faith? Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church stands as a testament to this. It is a place with a story unlike any other in San Antonio. Founded in 1983, Our Lady of the Atonement began as an Anglican Use parish.

This means it was created for Episcopalian converts who wished to retain elements of their Anglican heritage within the Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II approved this special arrangement. It allowed the community to keep familiar liturgical traditions.

Father Christopher Phillips was central to its founding. He worked tirelessly. With support from Pope Paul II and Archbishop Flores, Our Lady of the Atonement became a reality. His dedication extended to the church’s academy.

Now, Our Lady of the Atonement is part of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter. The Vatican created this for former Anglican communities. They could then become members of the Roman Catholic Church.

The church has a beautiful chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Atonement. At the entrance, a portrait honors Father Paul Wattson. He was an Anglican priest. He later joined the Roman Catholic Church. Father Wattson founded the Society of the Atonement and first invoked the title Our Lady of the Atonement. In 1919, the title was formally approved by Pope Benedict XV.

The sanctuary itself is traditionally styled. A central nave leads to an east-facing altar. Look up. Notice the fishnet-like matrix covering the ceiling. This symbolizes the Church’s role in evangelization. It is a powerful reminder of the call to spread the Christian faith.

Our Lady of the Atonement Academy is right next to the church. The school building is centered around the library. The academy was established in 1994. Its exterior walls resemble a medieval castle.

The Atonement Academy is known for its strong academics and spiritual grounding. In 2010, it had no dropouts. Virtually every graduate attended college. The Cardinal Newman Society recognized it as a Top 50 Catholic School. The school seal is the pelican.

The academy offers a wide range of classes. These include math, science, history, and foreign languages. Latin is offered from elementary through high school. High school students follow a “four by four” policy. This mandates four years of math and science.

The music program focuses on choral instruction. Student choirs participate in the liturgy of the Mass. Sports teams are known as the Crusaders. The school’s colors are black and red.

Every other year until 2020, students had the chance to go on a pilgrimage to Rome. They attended Mass in some of Christendom’s greatest churches. This reflects the parish’s commitment to a rich spiritual life.

Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community. It blends Anglican heritage with Catholic tradition. It offers both spiritual nourishment and academic excellence. The church stands as a symbol of unity. It demonstrates the power of faith to bridge divides.
